Athena also known as Athene or Pallas is the ancient Greek goddess associated with wisdom, knowledge, warfare and handicraft. She was known as the patron goddess of many cities throughout Greece the most notable being the city of Athens. It was said that she became the patron of the city after a contest with Poseidon. Both of the gods offered gifts to the people of Athens, Athena grew olive trees and Poseidon created a saltwater spring. Athena's gift was declared superior and as prize she became the patron of the city.  Often represented by an owl which would be kept on her shoulder and whisper the truths of the world to her she was said to lead soldiers to battle armed with a spear and clad in armour.

She is one of the most prominent gods from the time featuring in many stories including both the Iliad and the Odyssey written by Homer and the stories of Jason and the Argonauts as well as Perseus.
