Anglo-Saxon England, which lasted from the 5th to the 11th century, was a period marked by the settlement of Germanic tribes known as the Angles, Saxons and Jutes in Britain after the fall of the Roman Empire. These tribes merged with each other and the native Celtic Briton population to form the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms such as Wessex and Mercia. The Anglo-Saxons are known for their contributions to English law, culture and language as well as the spread of Christianity.
The Anglo-Saxons are known for their conflicts with Viking raiders and settlors who conquered all of their kingdoms aside from Wessex. The king of Wessex, Alfred the great, was able to defeat the invaders and force a peace with them. Later generations of Anglo-Saxon kings were able to reconquer the lands of Britain invaded by the Vikings, leading to Alfred's grandson Athelstan being known as the first king of all England.
