Under the reigns of monarchs like King John and his son, Henry III, England saw tensions between the monarchy and the nobility within the 13th century, leading to events like the signing of the Magna Carta in 1215. This limited royal power and established principles of due process. The century also saw the expansion of the English legal system and the establishment of Parliament. The economy was largely agrarian, though trade and towns were growing. The century was marked by religious influence, with the Church playing a central role in daily life. England also faced external challenges, such as conflicts with France and Wales, as well as internal strife between the crown and rebellious barons.
This piece is inspired by an artifact found in modern day England and held within the British Museum. Its inscription reads "IN NOIMNE DOIMNI" which is Latin and translates roughly in English to "In the name of the lord," as referenced to a papal bull published by pope Nicholas II.
