Cyprus has a rich and fascinating history that dates back to ancient times. The earliest evidence of human settlement on the island dates to the Neolithic period, around 10,000 BCE. During the Bronze Age Cyprus became an important centre for trade and craftsmanship, particularly known for its copper production, which was a key resource for the ancient world.

By the 12th century BCE, during the Iron Age, the island saw the rise of city-kingdoms such as Salamis, Kition and Paphos. These cities were heavily influenced by neighbouring ancient civilizations including the Egyptians, Phoenicians and Mycenaean Greeks. The island was home to a mix of Greek, Phoenician, and native Cypriot cultures, leading to a unique blend of artistic, religious and cultural practices.

In the 8th century BCE, Greek settlers arrived on Cyprus, further strengthening Hellenistic influences. The island became increasingly connected with the Greek world, with Greek-speaking inhabitants settling in the coastal cities. By the 4th century BCE, Cyprus was divided into several Greek-speaking kingdoms, most notably Ptolemaic Cyprus, following the conquest of Egypt by Alexander the Great and the rise of his successor, the Ptolemaic dynasty.

Throughout the ancient period, Cyprus was a melting pot of cultures due to its location as a crossroads between the Aegean, Anatolia and the Levant. This blend of influences contributed to the island's unique identity, which remained distinct even as it gradually became more aligned with Greek culture and politics.
