The Akan people are an ethnic group primarily found in the western part of Africa, mainly in countries such as Ghana, Côte d'Ivoire and parts of Togo. Known for their rich cultural heritage, the Akan speak languages belonging to the Kwa branch of the Niger-Congo language family, with Twi and Fante being the most widely spoken dialects. Traditionally, the Akan are known for their matrilineal society, where descent and inheritance are traced through the mother's line. They have a deep connection to their traditional religion, which involves worship of deities and ancestors. The Akan are famous for their intricate goldwork, vibrant textiles and elaborate ceremonies, including the celebration of important life events like births, marriages and funerals.
